Outline o Presidential election dates are fixed by the constitution and they take place on the Tuesday following the first Monday in November every four years. o Presidents are limited to two terms. Until FDR this was by convention but the constitution was amended to embody this provision after his death. o There is no such thing as a general election in the United States and o Presidents are elected not as party leaders but as individuals who have been nominated by one or other of the major parties. o The first stage of the Presidential election process is therefore the nomination stage which takes place between February and June of election year. o The key element in this process is now the primary elections in which party supporters in each state vote for delegates to the party convention (which...
