Social, historical, and cultural context of Mike Leigh on 'Abigail's Party' Mike Leigh, writer of Abigail's Party was born on 20th February 1943 in Salford, Lancashire, England. His grandfather was a Russian portrait miniaturist who emigrated in 1902; his father was a doctor, originally under the name Lieberman, but changed it to Leigh, the name that his son Mike inherited. In 1973, Leigh married Alison Steadman, an actress who became the lead role of Mike Leigh's most famous play, Abigail's Party. In 1978, Mike and Alison's first child, Toby was born. In 1881, their second son was born, called Leo. Throughout this relatively short period of time, Mike Leigh was acclaiming various awards for his obvious flare in playwriting.
