Most rebellions occur because of widespread dissatisfaction with an existing system of government. The reasons for dissatisfaction may be as a result of poverty or injustice under cruel, corrupt, or incapable rulers. Such a rebellion occurred in the colony of Virginia in 1676. The leader of the rebels was Nathaniel Bacon (1647-1676). He came to Virginia in 1673 and the governor of the colony at the time was Sir William Berkeley (1606-1677). Bacon wanted to limit the power Sir Berkeley had on the colony and give Virginian colonists the many rights that Sir Berkeley had refused to give them. Along with not giving those rights to the colonists, Sir Berkeley had abused the rights himself.
