Liberal Split January 1886 In January 1886 Gladstone was in government for the third time. Gladstone was now pledged to introduce home rule for Ireland, his attempt to do so immediately began to break up the LP. o The Whig section of the party led by Lord Hartington, refused to join Gladstone's Government. Hartington as well as being the leader of the Whig section of the party also saw his brother murdered by the Irish in Phoenix Park. o Chamberlain and Charles Trevelyan joined the Cabinet but resigned on the 15 March when Gladstone announced the details of the Home Rule Bill. o John Bright, the elder statesman of the party refused to join the government because of Gladstone's half-baked Home Rule Bill. Bright said "the Irish Parliament would be constantly struggling to burst the bars of the statutory cage in which he is sought to confine in" o The Liberals who stayed...
