Is it true to say that the Weimar Republic was doomed from the beginning? The Weimar Republic was created in 1919 with the abdication of Wilhelm II. The new government was the body that signed the Treaty of Versailles, and to many, that was a betrayal. The consequences of Versailles were severe to Germany, and many were looking for someone to blame and so the government was the ideal target. Communists and the right saw an opportunity to create the state they had been wanting and so were prepared to challenge the new republic. The richer Germany, the wealthy people, had done very well under the ruling of the Kaiser and therefore were distrusting the government. Considering all of these points, it would seem that the collapse of the republic could not be avoided, but was that really the case? From the start, the new Weimar government faced opposition from both left...
