Vida Goldstein, 1946 Vida Goldstein, suffragist and the first woman to stand for parliament in Australia, was 80 years old and still mentally strong when she died of cancer in her South Yarra home in the year 1949. Born in the town Portland, Victoria of Polish, Jewish and Irish heritage, Vida Goldstein came from a family with strong social and political views. Her parents Isabella and Jacob Goldstein were devout Christians and raised their children with strong social consciences.
