Have a little read: ... European Parliament In the words of the 1957 treaty of Rome, the European Parliament represents 'the peoples of the States brought together in the European Community'. There are a total of 626 representatives in the European Parliament, 87 of the representing the UK. France also has 87 representatives, and Germany has 99, which, between the most powerful countries in Europe, represents 43% of all the representatives. The first election of the representatives was in 1979. A new parliament is elected every 5 years. Each time a new treaty is signed, the European Parliament grows stronger, more powerful and more influential. Prior to the 1992 Maastricht Treaty, the parliament was only a consultative body, but with the 1992 Maastricht Treaty, and the 1997 Amsterdam Treaty, it has become a legislative parliament, with powers similar to the UK parliament. For international relations, and official occasions, the President (Nicole Fontaine) represents the whole of the European Parliament. The president also chairs the bureau's meetings. The Bureau, in this case, is 'the regulatory body that is responsible for parliament's budget and for administrative, organisational and staff matters.' 'The bureau includes the President, fourteen vice presidents, and five quaestors, who deal in consultative capacity with administrative and financial matters relating to the members and their statute.'
