Martin Rothwell General Strike Eighty years ago the British working class moved into action in the greatest ever demonstration of its power. On 3 May 1926 a General Strike was declared. Industry and transport ground to a halt as millions struck in support of the miners who had been locked out. Causes of the General Strike One of the largest factors that led to the general strike was the crisis of the coal-mining industry. Many factors contributed to the disaster that the coal industry faced. The First World War had a major impact on the coal industry in the years that followed it. The heavy domestic use of coal in the war meant that rich sources were running low. Britain exported less coal in the war than it would have done in peacetime, allowing other countries to fill the gap such as; The United States, Poland and Germany.
