Bethany Dumville: A224675 Do you think the Freedom Of Information Act will herald a new era of media freedom in the U.K.? The control of information is a large aspect of the British government. It is as simply described by McNair "activities designed to control or manipulate the flow of information from institutions of government to the public sphere beyond", (1995, p.132). The reason why this is an important area for research is outlined by Denton and Woodward, "information is power, and the control of information is the first step in propaganda", (1990, p.42). A further pessimistic view is taken by Clive Ponting, a former Ministry of Defence assistant secretary who was charged with breaching section two of the Official Secrets Act by "leaking two documents about the sinking of the Argentine cruiser General Belgrano in the 1982 Falklands War - the Royal Navy's first serious attack of the conflict", (http://news.bbc.co.uk/onthisday/low/dates/stories/february/16/newsid_2545000/2545907.stm).
