Compare the background and roles of MPs and Congressmen. What might an MP like and dislike about the American legislature? MPs and Congressmen both serve as representatives of the British and American people, respectively. However, I would argue that this is where the close parallel between the two ends. MPs are chosen by their party, and stand for nomination under this label; party affiliation seems to be of greater importance than the quality of the candidate in Britain. Whereas, in the US it is the constituents that select the candidates which should stand for election, not the parties. In the states pressure on Congressmen comes from the constituents, while in Britain pressures on MPs generally come from within the party itself. It is more difficult for MPs to take a stand against party policy than it is for Congressmen since there are greater party ties in Britain, these are virtually...
