Access the main problems facing British Government Between 1800 - 1905 Throughout the period of 1800 - 1905 the Government began to realise that their traditional ideas of individualism or self-help as it is also known was being frowned upon. The lack of restrictions from the Government was increasingly being questioned. This brought about an argument that went on for a long phase of time and for the Government especially, a new puzzle to solve. Since 1776 the accepted theory was that the, "economy would function more efficiently if people were free to pursue their own self-interest". This was seen to help individuals successfully earn money and so the equal chance of everyone doing well. This included the poorest of the poor.
