... Atomic theory is the study of the atom and the forces that hold them together. In ancient Greek philosophy the atom was used to describe the smallest piece of matter that existed. The word "atom" in Greek means "not divisible". Demetrius, a Greek was the first person to suggest that everything be made out of particles. There was a lot of experimental science in the 16th and 17th centuries and progress in atomic theory quickened. Chemists soon realised that all liquids, gases and solids could be sorted out into their elements. John Dalton, a British chemist was fascinated about this theory. Around 1805, he put forward his ideas that the smallest particles were like tiny, hard snooker balls. They could not be split. He called these atoms. Dalton suggested that there were just a few dozen different types of atom. He made up a list
