Science Research Assignment - Chernobyl Early morning at 1:23am on the 25th of April 1986, the world's most horrible nuclear power accident occurred at Chernobyl in Ukraine which was formerly known as USSR. The Nuclear Power Plant was located approximately 130km north of Kiev. It was the result of a flawed reactor design that was operated with poorly trained staff and without appropriate consideration for safety. The steam explosion and fire produced released about 5% of the radioactive reactor core into the atmosphere. The accident killed 31 people, 2 of which died instantly and due to the high radiation levels in the surrounding 30km, 13 500 people to be evacuated immediately. Another cause of the accident was the lack of safety considerations put in the design of the reactor resulting in a failure to compensate design weaknesses even though it was known before the accident.
