... Research Study Report 1. Over the last hundred years there have been many changes to speed limits for cars in Great Britain. One of the main reasons the speed limit has increased in the last hundred years is the increase in more advanced technology which in turn made engines more efficient and quicker. With the speed of cars increasing, naturally the speed limits have to be altered to suit the speed of the cars. In 1865 the speed limit was only 2 mph in towns, cities and villages. Cars had only been recently invented and their speeds would have been pretty slow 2. From these graphs we can see that the speed limit in built up areas is a lot slower in the UK than in Denmark and Sweden. Outside built up areas however the speed limit is a lot faster in the UK than it is in Denmark and Sweden. Again
