What affects the resistance of a wire? Aim The aim of this experiment is to determine how length and thickness of wire affect its resistance. Prediction Based on what I know about resistance, I predict that longer wire will have a higher resistance, and also that thinner wire will have higher resistance. More current requires thicker wires to give increased space for electrons to move, thereby decreasing the resistance, and longer wires with more coils are used in transformers to increase resistance. Equipment 110cm of 24SWG constantan wire 110cm of 28SWG constantan wire 110cm of 30SWG constantan wire 100cm ruler Multimeter and two leads 2x crocodile clips Diagram Method First, a 1m ruler was placed onto the desk and taped in position, then we cut a piece of 24SWG constantan wire approximately 110cm long and stretched it out parallel to the ruler (110cm was used when only 100cm was tested because we required some length to fix the wire at either end.)
