Terry Fox run for Cancer Terry Fox was a young man from British Columbia that was not a gifted athlete, but he was persistent. His determination improved his performance so much that in 1976, he won himself a place on the junior varsity basketball team at Simon Fraser University. In March 1977, Terry woke up unable to stand on his right leg. He learned the terrifying truth: he had a malignant tumor. Doctors amputated his leg six inches above the knee. The night before his amputation, he shifted his goals away from basketball and dreamt about running across Canada. As he recovered over the next 16 months, he planned a marathon run that would raise money for cancer research.
