What our users think of the Modern Foreign Languages essays in this section:

"Firstly, I think the font makes it difficult to read, so I would advise other users to use a standard font - it may be boring, but at least the marker won't miss anything out or misread something. Although this piece uses many examples, they don't really expand on it. Personal opinions are also important at this stage, yet there really aren't that many. The writer mixes several English and German words up, such as "Kathedrale" which should be "Dom" or "die City Bibliotek", the writer should have chosen either to translate it as "die Städtliche Bibliotek" or used the the English noun for it. "This essay was very well constructed. Excellent use of vocabulary and phrases. Well done."

"Overall, for a GCSE piece this is fairly good, especially where the dative "von uns" has been used. It is also quite detailed, personal opinions have been given, which is still important, and some attempt at more complex sentences have also been used. However, there are quite a few spelling mistakes, such as "heist" (heißt or heisst) or the omition of the "h" in "Schule" in the first paragraph. There are a few words, such as "komisch", which are used in the wrong context, which may suggest too much relience on a dictionary, without checking the context out. Although at this stage, grammar isn't worth an extreme amount of marks, it is still important for the marks awarded for coherency, there are a few, even basic sentences, which aren't right. The "verb second" rule is sometimes used, and sometimes ignored, the capitilisation of nouns is mostly used, but then on such words as "Uhr" it is forgotten. English words are sometimes appropriate in the context of school, however, words such as P.S.E and R.E. where there is a word in German, it is not. This student has attempted to use the cases, but seldom has used them correctly. This is not important at GCSE, however, where a word can have more than one gender to create a new meaning, it still needs to be looked upon, and when in doubt, it is advised that at the GCSE level you use the nominative case. "This is a really good piece. Opinions are used, which are important, and examples are also used to expand on a point, which shows confidence in the language, which is also important at this level. Even complex sentences are used, and correct. The discriptions show depth, and for the most the word order is correct. Gender may have lost a few marks, but for the most, this is a fantastic GCSE piece. SpiritedAway."
