How well did Spartan education prepare boys for war? Spartan soldiers were some of the fiercest, strongest and bravest fighters in the Ancient Greek world, with such legends as the Battle of Thermopylae demonstrating just how much damage they could do against an enemy much bigger than themselves. The Spartan soldier was a professional warrior: training from the age of seven, living the soldering lifestyle. Xenophon - The Lacedaemonians 4 "As he [Lycurgus] considered child-bearing the most important function of free women, he prescribed physical training for the women no less than men. Then he instituted contests for running and physical prowess for women just as for men, as he thought that when both parents are strong, their offspring are more vigorous." Women were made to exercise to as great an extent as men were. Clearly, it was thought that children needed two fit parents, in order to be fitter themselves in life....
