Discuss The Dietary Needs For An Elderly Person (65+ Years) Introduction As people grow older they become less active and their dietary needs change, especially after retirement. Food is required to maintain the health and state of the body. Many elderly people are unable to prepare their own meals and rely on the support of friends or family. They are often unable to do their own shopping and cannot prepare meals. The size of meals eaten by elderly people should decrease as less energy is needed daily, although the quality of the food eaten should remain high and should be a balanced meal. Elderly Deficiencies As our bodies age there is a gradual loss of calcium and other minerals in the bones and skeleton of the body. Many elderly people suffer from a condition called osteoporosis.
