Why do news stories have to be effective? News stories need to meet four criteria points; 1. It has to exist. 2. It has to communicate. 3. It has to make assertions of fact. 4. It has to make assertions or claims about values. But none of these four are enough since a story may exist but not be perceived; it may communicate but not be understood; it may make assertions but not be believed; and it may make value judgments that audiences disagree with. Therefore the criteria points have to be expanded, as follows; A story must exist, which means it must be embodied in physical/sensory objects, and those must be accessible and perceived by the audience.
