Which way are you inclined practical criticism or contextual approaches? If one is to study the discourse of a text, one might argue that it is vital to analyse it in such a way that it incorporated a contextual approach. Such as looking at the historical, social and cultural background of the text. Others, such as me, would argue that it is vital to look at the text in a practical way. For example I would say that literature is a work of art in itself and should be viewed firstly as an independent entity. Practical criticism is an effective way of analysing a text, of that there can be no doubt.
