Matt Duffy Sociology 02/02/04 Mogadishu, Somalia (1992) What Went Wrong? Mogadishu is not only Somalia's largest city; it is also the capital of the country. It is home to a seaport, an international airport, and also the Somalia National University. On October 3, 1993, members of the US Army Rangers and other special forces attempted to capture two of Mohamed Farrah Aidid's (a local Somali warlord) top officials in an operation which turned into a large firefight resulting in the unfortunate deaths of 18 American soldiers as well as more than 500 local Somalis. The reason for the United States aiding Somalia is that people of Somalia were starving, but could some of these deaths been avoided? The United States showed up in Somalia in 1993. Why is a country whose principle industries are food and beverages, and textiles struggling with starvation? when the news media began...
