How is the issue of African famine portrayed in the British media? Famine in Africa has been widespread throughout most of the modern era. The majority of African countries are not self sufficient in the production of food making them strongly reliant upon the income gained from cash crops to import food. Farming in Africa is heavily dependant on the climate, as for example, a drought can bring about a decline in the amount of locally produced food. Other problems include land erosion and degradation, soil infertility and even desert locusts. Factors such as political instability and civil war also have an effect on agriculture in Africa, food distribution is a major factor in the famine as certain governments and rebels block it.
