Goodnight Mr Tom is an incredible novel of mixed emotions and Michelle Magorian switches from the happy moments to the sad and tense stages. At the beginning of Chapter 21 the atmosphere is happy. Everyone is excited for Carrie, as it is her first day in High School. 'Carrie blushed with excitement' as she stood at the top of the stairs and her father 'gazed proudly at her' this shows that there is warmth in the air. 'Good luck, said Zach warmly' this proves the point of warmth. The next stage of the book is the talk between Zach and Will. Zach is worried about his parents and Will is trying to comfort him but still the subject is uncomfortable and tense. 'Will and Zach were constantly moving into patches of gloom and out into sudden patches of sunlight' here Michelle Magorian uses natural description to reinforce the atmosphere. It describes the whole chapter moving in out of happy and sad stages. Later in the chapter Zach and Will and all of their friends are at school when their teacher tells them they are to do a nature project. This causes excitement and happiness until Zach is called out of the classroom and given a mixture of good and bad news. He is told that his father has been badly injured and he is to go and visit his mother and see his father in London. Although it is for a bad reason Zach is glad that he is visiting them just in case he never sees them again. Zach then talks to Will while he is packing and he gives Will his Shakespeare book. This is a sign of good friendship and trust and because Zach wants to be an actor it is like giving a part of himself to Will especially as it was his great-grandfathers. The afternoon after this conversation is tense, as Zach doesn't like the waiting and wishes to leave immediately. After Zach's departure it is difficult for Will because it is his birthday the next day but that didn't stop him from having a good time. The birthday party was a big success and Will was given many presents. When opening the presents, after everyone had left, he saved Zach's present till last and this was a sign of good friendship.
