Response to improvisation Over a period of several weeks our drama lessons were based upon a theme called 'Deconstructing Barbie.' During these lessons we explored the myths, stereotypes and our reactions to Barbies. To do this we used a variety of skills and techniques; sound collage, role on the wall, freeze framing, discussion and hot seating. We started by looking at a Barbie and writing down our reactions and thoughts about it. We then shared them with the rest of the class and discussed what we had found. On seeing the Barbie, my initial thoughts were; pink, little girls, plaits, glitter, stereotypes, thin, Ken and dressing up. After discussing this with my class I realised most of our reactions were the same, but this did not surprise me. Next we were presented with a second stimulus; a girls' magazine. In groups we found an advert in the magazine and looked for 'hidden messages'...
