Quality is one of the main issues for the consumer; discuss the implication this has for designers and manufacturers. Quality of design, manufacture, performance and customer satisfaction are often the reasons why one product is chosen in preference to another. This is the issue that designer and manufacturer have to balance with the cost of design, manufacture and consequently the cost of the final product. The cost of quality can be broken down into two parts; the cost of conformance and the cost of non-conformance. The cost of conformance is the cost of procedures, which are necessary for the quality assurance system and to ensure faulty goods are never or seldom made. The cost of non-conformance is the cost that results from errors, faults, additional inspection, testing or repairing, unnecessary waste, down grading of faulty products, return of faulty products, loss of good will, and loss of market opportunity.
