'What makes a successful soap opera?' The term 'soap opera' originated from American radio serials of the 1930's, and owes the name to the sponsorship of the programmes by major soap powder companies. Like many television genres, the soap opera is a term originally drawn from radio rather than film. Soap operas are long running television programs that focus on everyday life. In a soap opera, each storyline is carried over from one episode to the next, keeping the viewer watching for what could be many years. Successful soaps may continue for many years, so new viewers have to be able to join in at any stage in the soap. In soap operas, the passage of time also appears to reflect that of 'real time' for the viewers; the characters age just as we do.
