Here we learn that Pip sees Joe as his best and closest friend. Later on in the novel it is sad to see how Pip comes to neglect Joe in such an insensitive and selfish way. The next character we are introduced to is Uncle Pumblechook. Mrs Joe likes Pumblechook, although he is really Joe s uncle, as his self-important bullying of the young is much more her style than that of her mild and tolerant husband Joe. Pumblechook is a prosperous corn-chandler who s every act is dictated by an exaggerated sense of his own position. Within the Gargery household his wealth gives him the status that he craves and he victimises Pip with endless sums, lectures on his low moral
