Oestrogen Oestrogen, steroid hormone involved in the development of secondary sexual characteristics in the female, the regulation of the menstrual cycle and timing of ovulation, and the maintenance of pregnancy. There are at least 18 different types of oestrogen that ca n be detected in human urine. They are all made by the body and are known collectively as oestrogens, the best-known naturally occurring forms being oestradiol, oestriol, and oestrone. Oestrogens are found in both males and females. In females they are made in the ovaries and in the placenta during pregnancy; they are also made in small quantities in males, mainly by the testes. They are also made in the adrenal gland in both sexes. In men the level of oestrogens in the blood remains constant, but in women it varies according to their phase of the menstrual cycle.
