Physics Coursework Planning Aim: To investigate the depth of penetration of a metal rod, with a sharp point, in sand when dropped. Equipment: Sand, sharp pointed metal rod (mass: 17.0 grams; 17.5 cm in length), large container, metre ruler, 30cm ruler, plastercine, electronic balance, stand, 2 clamps. Precautions and Safety * Take care while standing on desks lining up the rod and its target. * Keep the sand which the rod will penetrate level. * Make sure that the rod penetrates the sand vertically to avoid problems in measurement. * Make sure that the meter stick which the heights are measured from is touching the sand. * Ensure that the rod is dropped from exactly the desired height by clamping while it is placed against an object which is at 45 degrees to the meter stick.
