COMPARE THE WAY IN WHICH MEN AND WOMEN PRODUCE AND RELEASE GAMETES 0. Introduction We often accept the idea sexuality without questioning the way in which it is defined. In mammals, we often tend to (incorrectly) relate being male or female to certain characteristics such as the possession of a penis, special milk glands or bearing of the young. In general however, the feature used to determine whether an organism is male or female is universally determined by the type and number of gametes the organism produces. If the organism produces a large amount of and smaller gametes, then it is a male; if the organism produces larger and lesser amounts of gametes, then it is a female. It follows then that the way in which male and female humans produce and release gametes differ in many significant ways. 1.
