Sparrow The poem Sparrow by Norman MacCaig is about the survival of the common man, the survival being the main point. It is also about how a high class education and numerous degrees would not help someone in surviving the treacherous winter. There is no point in an education, when you won't live long enough, to use it. To survive the tough world, a person needs life/practical skills. The sparrow represents the average man and how we need life skills and an education to survive. The structure of the poem is consistent throughout the poem. There are four stanzas, each being between five to seven lines. This shows that each stanza is about the same. This could represent the sparrow, showing that he is never special, but throughout the poem he is ordinary. The first stanza is six lines and is the introduction to the sparrow.
