The Open Box Project To make an open box a rectangular or square piece of card is taken and four identical squares are cut out of each corner. A diagram of this exercise is shown below. In this diagram the grey corner squares are to be cut out. Then when they have been cut out folds are done along the dashed lines to create a box. The aim of this investigation is to find out what the size of the cut out square is for any given square of card so that it makes the largest box volume possible. To investigate this I am going to choose one size of card then I am going to work out from that what the optimum size of cut out square is for that piece of card and then try to find a formula.
