DO CONSUMERS HAVE ENOUGH PRIVACY WITH RESPECT TO COMPUTER HELD INFORMATION? Introduction Over the last forty years there has been a large increase in information technology use by businesses and governments, as electrical databases replace paper based filling systems. Consumers are carrying out tasks, which would usually require us leaving the house, such as shopping and banking, in the home with just a connection to the Internet. As the surge in usefulness of the Internet increases, there has been an increase in consumers fear over information privacy. In information collected by the information commissioner in 2001, it revealed nearly three-quarters of all adults in Britain are worried about the amount of personal details being stored electronically by companies and organisations. In 1991/92 the number of people complaining about alleged breaches of data protection totalled 1,747. By 2000/01 that figure had risen to 8,8751.
