Copyright is one branch of the larger legal field known as intellectual property, which also includes trademark and patent law. Copyright law is the legal foundation protecting the work of major industries, book publishing, movie production, music recording and software development. It is a very high priority of these industries to have this law as they account for huge economic activity all over the world. To obtain copyright protection the work must be original and fixed. The law states that fixed work is work that is recorded in some permanent format. Acceptable ways of fixing work include writing it down, storing it on a computer, floppy disk, CD or recording it on video.
