What Is The Internet? The Internet is a worldwide connection of computers. Many including businesses, governments and universities e.t.c may own these sites. Being 'on the net' means you can access all of the information on these computers from your home computer. You join the net by installing software and set-ups on your system from a certain company e.g. Tiscali and sign up to a price plan with them and then your online. To get connected to the Internet your computer needs to have a modem and then the modem has to be connected the phone through a wire. Through this piece of equipment a normal signal from the phone line is created into digital data in the modem. Modern modems can transfer data at very high rates e.g. broadband and ISDN.
