African American and their rights

... In the 1960's African Americans were being deprived of the same rights as many other American citizens. Due to this two groups were formed to help African Americans gain civil rights. These two groups were the Southern Christian Leadership Conference and the Black Power Movement; both groups had the same goal but had very different ways in achieving it. As the SCLC was lead by Martin Luther King, who thrived on putting his beliefs into action and felt that by using non-violence was the best method. However the Black Power Movement was lead by Malcolm X who felt that if attacked then violence was a way to resolve matters although he didn't promote violence. Also his methods were far more militant then King and he felt that King was 'the tool of the white man'. Therefore due to the differences between the two leaders this lead to the disagreement amongst
