... Was the New Deal a Success or a Failure? Question 1 - Use source A. and your knowledge of the period to explain why people supported Roosevelt in the 1932 election. At that period of time because of the depression, people connected the depression with Herbert Hoover and so people became unconfident in him, an example of this is when they called the shantytowns present within America because of the depression - 'Hoovervilles'. Also a famous banner carried in a demonstration of Iowa farmers said, "in Hoover we trusted and now we are busted." His own policies of laissez-faire, rugged individualism and his famous quote that prosperity was only round the corner would soon be used against him as people felt cheated by him. His attempts to restore America during 1930 and 1931 by tax cuts and persuading the business leaders not to cut wages were perhaps attempts to satisfy the
