... Georgina Hutton Why did the Tsar fall from power in March 1917? Tsar Nicholas II came to power in 1881 following the assassination of his father Alexander II. Here he remained in power until 1917, when he abdicated due to continuing tension and civil unrest within Russia. This essay will explain the many reasons, short medium and long term, which led to the eventual abdication of Tsar Nicholas. Long term causes, that is those that had been causing some rest for a significant period of time prior to 1917, were proving to be major problems for the Tsar and his country. Russia's army had been fighting on her Western Front for some time, with minimal success. Much land was lost, when battles in which poorly equipped Russian soldiers were forced to retreat. Moral was low within the army, not just because they were having very little success, but also due to the lack
