The Easter Rising which was a Republican rebellion started on Easter Monday 1916. 1200 members of a Fenian group; The Irish Republican Brotherhood together with a socialist group named the Irish Citizens' seized control of the Centre of Dublin after deciding that World War One was a good opportunity to stage an armed uprising against the British. Padraig Pearse the leader of the IRB was concerned that the issue of Ireland's freedom was being ignored because of the First World War so they decided the armed action would put life back into the Nationalist Movement. From the steps of the General Post Office in Dublin, which was the most important building in the city, Pearse declared that the rebels were 'The Provisional Government' of the 'Irish Republic'.
