... Northern Ireland History Mixed Questions 1.Why do Protestants still march to commemorate the battle of Boyne? In 1688 James the 2nd got thrown out of England by his son-in-law William of Orange. King James went to Ireland to raise an army to win back England with the help of catholic France in 1689. In 1690 William of orange took his army to Ireland and defeated James at the battle of the Boyne. Protestants still commemorate William of oranges victory today. In July Protestants march through Portadown wearing orange sashes and carry banners. What Protestants celebrate is a decisive victory that led to their community dominating Northern Ireland for the last three centuries. They fear that of they stop marching this will be forgotten. They fear that the next generation of Protestants will forget what happened and that that will lead to catholic domination and Ireland no longer being a part of Britain.
