... Explain why Ulster Unionists, together with their political allies, brought Ireland to the point of Civil war by 1914. The Unionists felt that Home Rule would mean an end to their dominance in Ireland, and therefore were willing to do anything to prevent it. With the support of the army, the conservatives and the lords, the Unionists were very powerful, and with all the tension between the Protestants and the Catholics, the Unionists almost brought Ireland to Civil war. The objectives of the Ulster Unionists included keeping their culture, religion land and industries. A prime objective involved the prevention of Home Rule, which many would do whatever it took to achieve, including war. On the other side, the Nationalists had set out to achieve independence, including there own land, culture industry, and at all costs, Home Rule. Therefore, it is apparent that the objectives of the Unionists and the Nationalists are
