Have a little read: ... Bloody Sunday and the Conflict in Ireland 1. In the early 1500's, King Henry VIII was the first person to start off the conflict in Ireland. He was originally Catholic, but he had an illegitimate child and in order to be able to divorce his current wife and marry a new one, he had to change his religion from Catholic to Protestant. This meant severing all links with Gaelic Ireland (who were all Catholic before Henry came along). He also made himself head of the Church of England, so when he had to ask to be divorced, he only had to ask himself. Ireland remained Catholic, and in theory this would have been all right, but Henry realised that there was a great danger of Ireland being used as a base of attack by other Catholic countries such as France and Spain.
