This put Hitler and thus the Nazi party in the position to use the power of the state against their opponents, allowing Hitler to eliminate his opponents. The Reichstag Fire is an example of Hitler using shocking events to eliminate opponents in Germany. The Enabling Act is another, as it allowed Hitler to create any laws he desired. Germany was also rapidly moving more towards dictatorship making it possible for Hitler to become the "ultimate" ruler. In 1933 Von Schleicher resigned as Chancellor and Hindenburg appointed Hitler as the new Chancellor. On 4 February Hitler got President Hindenburg to pass a decree that all election meetings had to be notified to the police at least forty-eight hours in advance, allowing the Nazi controlled police to come and break-up unwanted meetings.
