How Hitler consolidated his power Hitler was made chancellor by Hindenburg on 30th January 1933 after the previous chancellor resigned, this was Hindenburg's last resort even though Hitler and the Nazis lost 34 of their seats in the election. A step towards Adolf Hitler gaining complete control over Germany was taken on the night of 27th February 1933 when the Reichstag was destroyed by fire. The fire was almost certainly planned by the Nazis, Goebbels and Goering in particular. A Dutch communist, Marinus van Der Lubbe, was blamed for the fire. The plan was to make the communists despised in Germany so that Hitler had an excuse to have all the Communists arrested and also to obtain a decree from President Hindenburg giving the Nazi government powers to arrest anyone they thought was a threat to Germany.
