On the 27th February 1933, the Reichstag building in Berlin was set on fire. The fire was blamed on communists and a communist, Van Der Lubbe, and he was executed. There was to be an election on the 5th of March, so Hitler used the Reichstag fire to increase his power and make the Nazis a single party dictatorship. This question will explain how. On the 30th of January 1933, Hitler was appointed Chancellor of Germany. Hitler felt that this was not enough, that his grip on Germany wasn't tight enough; the Nazis did not have a majority in the Reichstag.
