A campaign for women's suffrage developed in the years after 1870 due to several reasons. Before 1870, a large-scale movement had not been created, so in the 19th century women had almost no property rights, very little employment opportunities and hardly any political rights. Women suffered from a number of restrictions: both laws which were made to restrict their freedom including a law banning women from working in coal mines, one of the best paying jobs that a woman could have, and what society thought a woman's role and qualities should be, less intelligent, weaker and concentrated around the family and her husband. Women primarily began to campaign for suffrage because of their inferior status to men, they wanted a change. Women were fed-up of being treated like second class citizens.
