They were preparing for what could be their final chance to see the light of day again. But all at the late Battle time of 7:30am, the silence of the crisp, cold air beside the French river of the Somme was broken just two minutes before, by two enormous mines, exploded on the shoulder's of the Albert Bapaume Road. The Tyneside Scottish battalions had to evacuate in order to avoid the fall out from the mines.
