The Changing role and status of women in Britain since 1900 1) Source A is a photograph taken from a Suffragette demonstration in London, 1908, and illustrates several supporters, including leader of the organisation Emily Pankhurst, all respectably dressed. In the background we can see some male figures, distinguishable by their different hats. There is no doubt the photograph is a piece of propaganda, and we therefore must assume it was taken by a member or supporter of the Suffragettes. It depicts the policeman, on the right hand side, turning away from ladies. Considering he is a representative of the state and authorities, one may conclude that the attitudes towards the Suffragettes were that they were doing little wrong in their protests. However, this is a propaganda picture, and it could easily have been "staged" in order to persuade the British public into believing the Suffragette party didn't just revolve around
