Explain the development of the Long Drive The Long Drive started in 1861 when ranchers decided they would move their cattle to the East where they could get ten times as more money when selling them. In 1861, Civil War broke out between the Northern and Southern states. Texan ranchers left their farms to fight for their army. The ranchers lost the war. The defeat destroyed the economy in the South. However, the cattle left to their own devices, had multiplied. Consequently there were now approximately 5 million longhorn cattle in Texas in 1865. But due to the Civil war there was now no market for them to be sold at in the South. There was however, a market in the north. If the ranchers could get their cattle to the North they would fetch ten times as more than the South markets would. Homesteaders who had established themselves...
